They’re open the first Friday in March until the first Monday in December. Developed Campsites Most campsites accommodate six people per site, and larger group camping areas are available, too. All developed campsites have water, picnic tables and grills, and they provide marked paths to bath houses and toilets. Outdoor Activities Most Virginia State Parks offer hiking trails, fishing, playgrounds and picnic facilities. Some have bicycle trails, bridle trails and swimming pools, too. Most of them rent sports equipment needed for the particular park, such as boats, bikes and even the horses! Obtain free permits by mail or during open park hours between sunrise and one hour before sunset. The park is home to large populations of black bears, so items that smell – food, fragrant soaps, toothpaste – must be bagged and dangled from a rope at least feet up a tree. This kind of “roughing it” is suited for experienced campers only. The trail here is well-maintained, excellent for beginning hikers.

Training Ship Vindicatrix The former sailing ship Vindicatrix was moored in the Old Arm at Sharpness from to to provide a base for training boys as deck hands and stewards for the merchant navy. The courses lasted two or three months, and around 70, boys received their basic training here. The boys were taught ropework, boat handling, signalling, knowledge of the compass, cleaning and serving in the mess. When they left at the end of the course, they were found employment on a ship. Most of the boys came straight from leaving school, and for many it was their first time away from home.
They found the life very hard, but they acknowledge that their short stay on board rapidly turned them into young men. Memories of Discipline Peter Bennett was a catering boy in autumn second from left with a white collar , and his best mate was the deck boy John Murphy second from right with a blue collar. Peter remembers that discipline was very strict.
One of the most important rules was that there was to be no fighting whatsoever. To be caught fighting meant instant dismissal, and the boys were all so desperate to go away to sea that this rule was almost always adhered to. Boxing was encouraged and did provide an opportunity for settling grievances, but prizes were awarded for style rather than victory, and when Peter and John met in the ring, they won the medal for the best bout of the evening.

We love living up the hill from the Gloucester Marine Railways—never a dull moment! As the fisheries business grew to encompass a wharf, a grocery store, warehouses and 15 schooners, the need arose for a way to repair and maintain the fishing vessels. In , the company constructed the first of two marine railways on the northern-most tip of their property on Rocky Neck.
From then until about , the Railways used a steam engine to haul up the vessels. One note of interest is that the gears used in the steam engine were produced at the same factory that built the engine for the Civil War battleship, the Monitor. By , the railways was maintaining 20 first class vessels. Frederick Albert Cook reportedly brought his schooner to the Railways to be sheathed for ice and outfitted for an Arctic expedition.
In the late s the Mayflower II came for repair. Recently the privately owned foot Nantucket Lightship was hauled up in dry dock as she received fresh paint and maintenance. A modern Travelift has recently augmented the original railways as GMRC keeps moving ahead, from one century to the next, distinguished as the oldest continuously operating marine railways in the country and a well respected member of the marine industry in the Northeast.
Therefore many schooners, such as Roseway, built at this time were not strictly designed for fishing but in order to protect American honor in the annual races. Father and son worked side by side onRoseway, carrying on a long New England history of wooden shipbuilding.

The Berklee College of Music student was strolling with a friend in March , traversing the city after their apartment building lost power. In their travels, Puth’s friend played soothsayer. That lazy night in college now seems worlds away from the accelerated success Puth has achieved in the past month. It dethroned ‘s pop pinnacle, Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk! Just to put that in context: Another Jersey musician — Bruce Springsteen — has never had a No.
Meanwhile, the song has also become a global smash, with its music video earning million YouTube views in two weeks, and its No. The chorus, with its soft-spoken refrain “I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again,” was revered by Atlantic Records and sent off to Khalifa, who added the rapped verse and pre-chorus.

Less well known is the Battle of the Hook — the battle that took place across the York River from Yorktown 16 days before the British capitulation.
Although rather brief, it included the largest cavalry engagement of the war, with more than horsemen involved. The Battle of the Hook reenactment in Gloucester is being financed entirely by donations, including the educational programs. The Inn at Warner Hall, where the reenactment will take place, is located roughly three and a half miles from U.

February 7, , 7: My mission—big bluefin tuna—is a bucket list check off. Expenses are always a factor in commercial fishing. Big catches off Canada have tuna prices down, so fuel savings are essential. The only reason we stayed here is because there are no other RV parks in, or around Salem. Plus, we wanted the water-front view. The site we had was the best in the park, if you want a view of the harbor. The site we stayed in was next to the dock southeast end of park. If you are looking for a quiet place where you can sit outside and relax There are no sewer hook-ups here. When you check-in they will provide you with one free pass and a map to the county sewer department one mile away where you can dump.
If you have a large coach like us and the county sewer department still has construction going on, don’t attempt to go here. At the county sewer department there’s a long road back to where the dump station is and as you reach the end of the road, there is ‘no place’ to turn a big coach around. Plus, the dump would be on the wrong side of your unit. We had to back our coach all the way out, find a place to turn around, then drive backwards all the way back to the dump site.
If you have a tall coach you will smash your roof and side-walls because of the trees on the property. You have been warned! It had water and electric and they were in good working order.
