The 13ZN is one you really don’t want to miss. He is a devoted enthusiast of vintage watches — in particular early- to mid th-century chronographs. When we talk about vintage chronograph movements, there are many deserving of our attention — from the relatively common Valjoux 72 that powers anything from a Rolex Daytona to a Gallet Multichron 12, to the exceedingly rare and complicated Caliber that resides in a Patek Perpetual Calendar Chronograph.

However, as much as it is a sin to claim this for the latter, neither of the two movements we just mentioned are truly “in-house,” since the Caliber is still ultimately based on a Valjoux ebauche. In fact, the number of companies that produced both watches and movements were few and far between. Longines 13ZN in steel — notice the beautiful blued hands and sector dial.

Of course, we are talking about the Longines caliber 13ZN, one of the arguably most beautiful chronograph movements ever developed, until perhaps the release of the A. While Swatch has positioned the Longines brand rather differently since its acquisition in by Ebauches S. Longines Flyer in the 19th century.

To that end, Longines was appointed the official supplier for the International Aeronautical Federation IAF in , which enabled the company to be involved in many aeronautical expeditions during the early 20th century.

First check the inner rim of the watch face also called the rehaut, which is french for “flange” between the dial and the crystal. If the watch was produced in or newer the serial should be engraved on the rehaut. On older Rolexes, this serial is located on the side of the watch case at the 6 o’clock position where the bracelet is attached.

The first number represents the year and the second number (or letter) represents the month ( for Jan.-Sept. and O,N and D for October, November and December). For example if the serial number was and you knew the watch was made sometime in the ‘s it .

Longines Serial Numbers

There are few brands that take as much pride in their heritage as Longines. Not surprising, really, when you consider that the winged hourglass brand pioneered the way for the reissue. In fact, the Saint-Imier manufacturer is so proud of their history that their own museum is home to more than 10, historic pieces, while the brand also routinely holds competitions around the world in search of their oldest watches. A big year for Longines, was not only the same year that Longines began manufacturing their components under a single roof in their brand-new factory in the long meadows that the brand is named for, but also the year they began consecutively numbering the watches they produced.

Typical of the watches that Longines produced at the time, a winged hourglass is engraved both on the movement and inside its cover, while a floral decoration and two blank crests adorn the front. The overall splendid condition of the watch, as well as its still properly functioning mechanically wound-up movement, proved to be a major find for the historic manufacturer of timepieces.

To determine the approximate age of your watch, open the case and find the serial number, usually found engraved on the movement or the case back itself, then match it up with the list on this page.

They’re not the first genuine Longineses I have seen with a number over I don’t understand what is wrong. Longines, like all the other producers of the earliest DH, sent and sold to the OKW small lots and not an unique lot sequantially numbered of watches!! I hope my english is good enough to tell what I mean without being misunderstanding: Simply because this is not true. This because, in those first days, OKW bought many small lots, from many different producers, makers, distributors.

I’ve got two DH Longines, with very close numbers each others three numbers both in serial number of the movement and DH numbers I think that between one stock and the following one could be produced and sold to the WH stoks made by different makers. I’ve seen and got Gala, Revue Sport, Helios with number lower than Longines wrote over the backs only what the customers wanted. On the Longines’s museum records sometime figures the writing “special engraving”.

DH numbers were considered “special engravings” requested by the customers thought the agent. Maybe Longines didn’t know who was the final customer and the final destination of its DH watches.

It has been suggested on several occasions that the wristwatch was originally invented in after a request to his jeweller Cartier by the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont for a timepiece that he could consult in flight, his traditional waistcoat worn pocket watch being far too inconvenient for this purpose. In truth, there are so many conflicting claims as to who created the first wristwatch that we are unlikely ever to establish the definitive facts regarding this issue, but it is unquestionably the case that since its first formative years, the evolution of the wristwatch has been inextricably linked with the world of the pilot.

Universally, the quality of these pieces is exceptionally high, and this makes sense when we stop to consider the type of individual who purchased these items in the first instance.

This is a Vintage Longines gents wristwatch. A 14K gold case of rectangular Art Deco design. A silvered dial with gilt numerals. A manual wind Longines calibre mechanism, serial number to case and mechanism Presentation box. A very nice, early example of a Longines.

Remember that watches were not necessarily sold in order or sold close to the date of manufacturer. Hamilton used a date letter instead of numbers to replace the first number of the full serial number on some of their movements. The table below shows the letters used .

Description Longines is one of the oldest Swiss watch manufacturers with an unparalleled history of invention, innovation, patents and awards. The company is also responsible for some of the most beautiful watches ever made. Here we have a superb example from , when technically, Longines were competing head to head with and beating almost all of the other Swiss watch manufacturers.

The Longines Admiral Automatic was launched in following the Flagship in This example has a top class Longines Automatic movement and an ultra high class 35mm, 18ct watch case. We happen to think almost all of Longines classic vintage dial designs are a step ahead, or at least a step apart from the rest, in terms of elegance and sophistication. The dial has a light vertical cut finish, which picks up the available light beautifully and the applied oblong base hour indices are interesting for being double inlaid with onyx which sits proud of the base.

The Movement This watch carries the original Longines Calibre , 17 Jewel movement, which is in tip-top condition following a thorough overhaul and service by our vintage Longines specialist watchmaker. This means the movement has been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt using only original Longines parts where required, then carefully calibrated and tested.

Determining the Date of a Bulova Watch

Those three date ranges are differentiated by the presence or absence of certain case and movement markings as well as the nature of any such markings, as explained below. In general, for all time periods, it is important to understand that Bulova watches never provide an obvious date of manufacture anywhere on the watch. Rather, the date must be “de-coded” using symbols, serial numbers, and two-character codes placed on various parts of the watch.

These codes and the manner in which they should be interpreted is the subject of this article.

You can also search the watch catalog for specific watch characteristics, or you can browse the entire catalog. If you are unsure of which year your Longines watch was produced, try our year identifer, which will give you an approximate year, based on the serial number indicated on the watch movement.

The information below was gathered and amalgamated from various sources on the Internet. Sadly, I didn’t keep a record of where it all came from, but none of it is my own work. I can at least say thanks to Agent Orange, JoT, “mach 0. I can’t vouch for the accuracy of any of this information, but I’ve found it useful as a first step in estimating dates of manufacture for some of the watches in my collection.

Serial numbers may be found on movements, case backs or dials depending on the make, model and age of the watch in question. It’s not unusual to find movements that are one or two years older than the cases containing them. So, how old is your watch? Bulova used a two character identification system. The first character is a letter defining the decade of manufacture: So “M6”, for example, is Prior to Bulova used a symbol dating system as shown in the following picture.

I’m no graphics wizard so please treat the symbols as approximations only: From the ‘s to the ‘s, Breitlings may be dated by their movement serial numbers as per the following chart sourced from http:

How to Date a Wittnauer Watch By Meredith Jameson ; Updated April 12, Antique and vintage watches can be defined as being over years old or no longer in production and can be found at many jewelry stores, watch repair stores or online. Wittnauer watches began with Albert Wittnauer, who created his brand of watches in New York in In , the Wittnauer watch company joined with Longines watches and became the Longines-Wittnauer Co.

As such, many vintage Wittnauer watches have serial numbers that are listed under the Longines Company. Turn the watch over to determine if the case back is a snap back or screw back. Most older watches, including most Wittnauer watches, are snap back cases. The case back will be smooth with a small notch on the side where a tool may be inserted. Use a small tool with a flat blade, such as small standard screwdriver or a case knife, to loosen the case back at the notch and open the case back.

Look for a serial number stamped on the inner workings of the watch and write down this number.
