The sink and refrigerator would have to be on the same side of the room, and ours are not. But that still left me with the problem of our non-working ice and water dispenser. I wanted a solution that would preferably not involve tearing up our kitchen floor to run a pipe underneath, or any other similarly-major DIY construction effort.
So I decided not to connect the refrigerator water line to the sink across the kitchen, but instead to go down through the kitchen floor and connect to the main water pipe in the basement. It ended up fitting perfectly into the hole in the floor behind the fridge space that had been made for a no-longer-used TV cable why had there once been a TV cable behind the refrigerator? So I put some tape on the end of the water line and threaded it down through the floor to the basement.
The connection would need some kind of valve to both seal and allow water to flow into the refrigerator line as needed, like a saddle valve. And I just happened to have a leftover saddle valve that came with our humidifier parts. The valve came with some written instructions which were helpful… but I wanted to watch someone actually using it to make sure I understood how it worked.
Fortunately, I found a few instructional videos online, and it looked pretty straightforward and relatively easy to install. I started by turning off the main water valve, and opened a faucet in the basement to drain water out and relieve any pressure.

But now we can’t figure out how to run the water line to the refrigerator. Our home sits on a slab, and the pipes are in the wall. What are the options? The main water line comes into a slab home in the slab, and will come out of the slab in a location such as where the water heater is located.

If the freezer temperature is above 10 degrees F. It functions best when the freezer temperature is set between 0 and five degrees F. If the freezer temp is too high make sure the condenser coil is clean and the condenser fan is working to cool the condenser and compressor. Check the evaporator coil for frost. If too much frost is built up the air can’t circulate thru the coil and you will need to check the defrost components for a failure. Water Inlet Valve If the refrigerator ice maker is not working the water inlet valve might be defective.
The water inlet valve is an electro-mechanical valve. The coil can show good for continuity and still not let the water thru. Ice Maker Assembly If the ice maker is not working it could be that the ice maker assembly itself is defective. The freezer temp should be between degrees for the ice maker to cycle properly. There are several components in the control module of the ice maker that can fail and most are not sold separately.
Also, ice makers have a relatively short lifespan and so it might not be worth fixing. If other, simpler parts like the water inlet valve or shut off arm have been ruled out, and the only thing left is the ice maker itself, replace it as a unit. The water inlet valve which supplies water to the ice maker is designed to work with a minimum of 20 psi of water pressure.

Why do you want the ice maker in before of the softener? It does not add salt to the water. The salt is only used for regeneration. Peace Dave Dave is correct. We have had a softener at home for 25 yrs plumbed to soften the home’s total water supply. We drink, cook, make ice using the softened water.
If we didn’t the water has a metallic taste and leaves rings on fixtures. IMO if feel you need soft water for other uses you ought to soften all the water rather than make ice with the untreated source water. The salt is a “cleaner” for the softener media during regeneration. When the softener regenerates a series of valves engage so there is no cross contamination during the regen process therefore no salt taste.

During each ice making cycle, the arm rises up and then drops back down after the new ice is dumped into the ice cube bin. As ice accumulates in the bin it prevents the arm from dropping back down. When the arm is high enough, the ice maker shuts off and no more ice is made until the ice level in the bin drops. Please read our safety information before attempting any testing or repairs. The ice maker can also be turned off manually by lifting the arm all the way up into a locked position shown below.
The arm is supported at one or both ends. One end extends into the back of the front support see photo above. If it is not securely in place, it could cause the ice maker to malfunction. Confirm that the arm is securely in place.
